Modelling research about Neandertals' locomotion

This study aims to reconstruct a 3D virtual model of a Neandertal using different bones from different fossil remains (Spy I and II, Neandertal 1 and Kebara 2, La Ferrassie 1 and 2) and integrate them into a single model. The reconstruction of the Neandertal model is performed using Meshlab, Amira and lhpFusionbox – which has been developed at LABO. A bonobo skeleton will also be constructed using the same method as detailed above. A full biomechanical analysis of obtained 3D models will then be performed, including computer graphics visualization of the results, motion displacement graphs and muscle moment arms.

This research aims to bring new elements about the locomotion of the extincted specie, and understand if their morphology would offer them any kind of physiological advantages compare to modern humans.
