Fundamental research, and modelling, related to the skull and cervical spine

The purposes of our researches are to investigate biomechanical aspects of different anatomical regions such as the cervical spine, temporomandibular joint. Our methods focus on various procedures for providing data collection related to the musculoskeletal system and joint kinematics. We used various data processing to allow heterogeneous data fusion and for providing advanced visualization and processing of bone motion, joint behaviours, motion axis determination and estimation of muscle length and orientation.  New in vivo protocols are developed to target and validate kinematics features analysis in the clinical fields.

Image 1. shows the results of (1) upper cervical spine in-vivo data during axial rotation. The latter model includes biomechanical features such as the location of the instantaneous helical axis (A), muscle lengths (B) and moment arms (C) (as shown for the obliquus capitis inferior muscles, left:26.15 mm and right:32.62mm). The image 2. represents cervical spine in-vitro data during extension (D) and flexion (E) and anatomical frames for C2 and C7.

The results are obtained using the in-house software lhpFusionBox.
